From the Clubhouse in Ft. McKinley, I later on transferred to the clubhouse in Camp Murphy to stay close to my Department of National Defense job on the GHQ, AFP building.
The Secretary of National Defense, Gen. Alfredo Santos, under Pres. Carlos Garcia, was from Bulacan. His projects were intended to bolster his ambition to become a Senator, as he was the Provincial Governor of Bulacan then.
Plans were made by the Army Engineers for the North Diversion Road from Balintawak to Bocaue, Bulacan. It was carried out by the Army Engineers with equipment given by the U.S. Government.
After that, plans were made to build a camp in Tagaytay to house the Southern Luzon Headquarters located in the sugar cane hacienda of Ex-Speaker Yulo in Canlubang, Laguna. This was the idea of Amang Eulogio Rodriguez, former Governor of Rizal Province, who became President of the Senate.
To ensure passage of a bill appropriating money for this project, a road from EDSA to Tagaytay via Antipolo was planned, with subdivided lots along the way allotted to every Cabinet member, every Congressman, and other officials involved in the construction project.
The project was constructed by the Army Engineers using equipment given to the Army from U.S.A.
My quarters was in the BOQ (Bachelor Officers Quarters) in the Officers Clubhouse in Murphy. I visited my family in Baguio after every payday and let my children draw lots in relation to their proximity to me when we went to sleep on our common bed in the house of Celice Plota.
Later on I transferred them to the Summer House of the SHD in Cabinet Hill, Baguio.
In Murphy I played tennis, bowling, and swam in the mornings.
