We subsisted with the small amount of rice and dried fish from the Red Cross and Aning’s earnings as a nightclub entertainer or hostess in Metro Grill Garden, where she and Pat worked before the outbreak of the war.
Pat could not work because she had to nurse our baby. My health did not permit me to work because I was weak and had malaria bouts now and then.
My beriberi and anemia took a lot of good food to cure them. Eventually they subsided and I regained my strength. But, for lack of medicine, my malaria persisted though not as frequent as before.
