When I got well enough to go around, I applied for work in the Academy No. 3 for Bureau of Constabulary soldier in Gagalangin, Sampaloc, Manila. I was accepted.
We were newly hired employees to work as janitors and laborers in the big schoolhouse converted into an academy for non-commissioned soldiers. There were three of us.
Our job was scrubbing the wooden floor with coconut husk until it was shining clean, with melted candles as floor wax.
We scrubbed and swept, scrubbed and swept the schoolroom floors the whole day long. This lasted for a month, when an opening for a civil service employee gave
me the chance to become a Civil Service Clerk in Academy No. 1.
